AI is increasingly being utilized in various industries and professions worldwide, and the FDI's healthcare workers believe that its ability to provide enhanced and efficient outcomes will significantly impact the improvement of healthcare services and patient care, particularly in dentistry.
The White Paper, created by the FDI AI Working Group, outlines four key objectives: defining AI, showcasing concrete examples of how AI can benefit oral healthcare delivery, education, and research, identifying ways AI can support FDI's Vision 2030, and emphasizing the potential risks of AI and the need for the dental community to establish standards, regulations, and best practices for AI.
The paper also discusses the impact of AI on four branches of dentistry: patient care, community and public health, workforce planning and monitoring, and education and research.
The FDI is confident that the use of AI will create new opportunities for oral healthcare professionals in areas such as diagnosis, data analysis, and predictive dentistry. However, the paper also acknowledges potential drawbacks such as bias and limited generalizability, as well as the importance of data protection and ensuring AI works for the benefit of the people. The paper highlights the need to address these risk factors to fully realize the potential of AI in oral care delivery, education, and research.
