Medical emergencies, although infrequent in dental settings, can be life-threatening and require prompt recognition and effective management. Most emergencies are preventable through comprehensive preoperative assessment, including detailed medical history, medication review, vital sign monitoring, stress reduction protocols, and appropriate patient positioning. This presentation provides a practical overview of common medical emergencies encountered in dental practice, including vasovagal syncope, postural hypotension, hypoglycemia, hyperventilation, acute adrenal insufficiency, asthma exacerbation, allergic reactions and anaphylaxis, cerebrovascular accidents, seizures, angina, myocardial infarction, airway obstruction, and cardiac arrest. Emphasis is placed on understanding the underlying pathophysiology, early recognition of warning signs, and evidence-based emergency management using Basic Life Support (BLS), oxygen therapy, patient positioning, and timely administration of emergency medications such as epinephrine, glucose, bronchodilators, nitroglycerin, corticosteroids, and anticonvulsants. The presentation reinforces that preparedness, prevention, and systematic emergency protocols are fundamental to ensuring patient safety and improving outcomes in dental practice.
